Food Cravings & Healthy Eating

5.27.14

My latest craving:
  • Orange juice in the morning.
  • Vanilla greek yogurt and blueberries late at night before bed to try to hold me over until the morning (I wake up starving in at about 4 or 5am).
  • Well, I guess it is anything and everything that I don't normally eat. Ice cream, cake, cookies, SWEETS!
  • Really - I wish I was craving something. For the most part, I am just not really liking anything. I think my stomach is being smashed and food just isn't that appealing. I still love a nice cold glass of milk though.

4.7.14

My latest craving:
  • Tuna salad with pasta - although, I have to limit this due to the mercury.  It is YUMO!
  • SWEETS - Dear God, take the sweets away from me... my thighs don't need to expand any more!

3.7.14

My latest craving:
  • I am still into Ovaltine and salty things - however, not as addicted to pickles as I was.
  • Steal cut oatmeal with peanut butter and brown sugar has become my staple in the morning.  Not only is it very filling, it is gluten free and contains protein and sugars - good for a morning wake up and for some nutrition for the baby.  Couple that with a glass of Ovaltine and I am a happy camper.
My latest healthy food:
  • Fruit Smoothies - I have been making a fruit smoothie in the vitamix a few times a week as a mid-day filler and a great way to get some essential nutrients.
    • My latest favorite was:
      • Orange juice
      • Ice
      • Flax seed
      • Spinach
      • Half an large or a full small apple
      • Banana.
        • It comes out to be this lovely green color but is super yummy!
        • I might try throwing some raisins, prunes, or dates in there and maybe some almonds next time - for a little added nutrients and flavor.

2.14.14

My latest cravings:

  • Ovaltine with 2% Organic, DHA milk.  My mom used to make me drink Ovaltine as a kid because I never liked to eat enough or anything that gave me the right nutrients when I was training 15-20 hours a week in gymnastics.  Now, I finally appreciate it.  I love the taste of it, it is loaded with nutrients and is a great way to start my day.  Baby loves it too apparently.  I know some moms that never introduce regular chocolate milk to their kids and just do Ovaltine - so they don't know the difference.  I think I might try to get Rick on board with that.  Although, I have never met an adult other than my husband that loves straight up chocolate milk more than Rick.  In his defense, it is a quick recovery fluid for after long endurance workouts.  Pigs will actually fly and be purple before I get Rick to try something new like Ovaltine.
  • Zesty Dill Pickle Spears - I have been eating these as if they are their own food group lately - YUM!

My latest healthy food that I am trying to add to my diet: Kale

  • Kale is a leafy green.  It contains all kinds of great things for you, like: beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, and calcium - All good for baby and good for me.  It has a sweeter taste than regular lettuce and is actually closer to the broccoli family than lettuce.  Thanks to my mom for getting me started on this one.  I actually really like it.  I have been adding it to sandwiches instead of lettuce. And yesterday, I cut it up really small and put it in some tuna with fresh green beans, red pepper, mayo, mustard, and dill weed.  I toasted up some bread with a little baby swiss cheese and had some open sandwiches.  Oh, and I of course, had two pickles on the side.  Now, I am at my fish allotment for the week due to the mercury.  If you are interested in starting to eat Kale, I suggest buying it organically - as it is grown as a leafy green and the leaves are very tight - so it may be hard to properly clean the pesticides off of the leaves.
  • I am trying to eat more plant based foods - One, because they are great for you but two, because I recently went to a course about Dementia and Alzheimers Disease and research shows those who tend to eat more fish/white meat, less red meat, more plant based foods, less fatty foots, more natural foods like nuts, less man-made foods like twinkies had a MUCH decreased risk of developing these severely debilitating diseases.  Since both run in my family on both sides, I think it is important to try to follow these guidelines.  The course also taught me how bad glucose/sugar is for you if not naturally derived from the environment.  I am trying to drink way less juice (even though it is yummy) and drink more water and milk (although dairy is not listed as a food group that helps with this disease, I just love milk lately).
